What to do in the New Orleans area this Fourth of July weekend

  Uncle Sam Jam kicks off at Lafreniere Park in Metairie with free live music beginning at 3 p.m. Performing artists include Wilson Phillips, the Guess Who, Phunky Monkeys, Creole String Beans, The Total Betty s, the Topcats, and the Marine Forces Reserve Brass Band. A hot-dog-eating championship is set for 3:30 p.m. with fireworks starting at 9 p.m.    Orleans Parish    The Creole Tomato Festival in the French Quarter will celebrate the eponymous fruit at the French Market, Moonwalk, and restaurants in the area. Festivities include food vendors, a kids area, a parade, and a bloody mary trail through several restaurants. The Second Line parade will begin at Washington Artillery Park at 11 a.m.   

After one-year pandemic hiatus, Virginia International Tattoo makes its big comeback

Last year, they had to go virtual. This year, they re going outdoors.  So, it won t take place (as it usually does) indoors at the Norfolk Scope Arena, but, outside at Old Dominion University s S.B. Ballard Stadium. It s absolutely fantastic, from the veteran performer to the new performer, said Lance Pedigo, Massed Pipes and Drums drum major. The ones that have done this before, obviously, it s very exciting to get back in front of a live audience. Marine Corps Chief Warrant Officer 2 Eric Kyne, of the Marine Forces Reserve Band from New Orleans, Louisiana, agrees. We re absolutely thrilled, super excited to be here, Kyne said. On top of it, this is the first trip we ve made since the pandemic.
