A family of six from Soasoa Labasa are counting their lucky stars after they escaped unharmed when a landslide moved their house by almost 10 metres during the heavy rain brought by TC Ana.
Kamlesh Kumar says his parents, brother, sister-in-law and 2 nieces managed to move out of the house moments before the incident.
Kumar says at around midday Sunday, his family could feel something was about to happen as they could feel their house moving.
He adds they didn’t take any risk and moved out immediately.
The family is currently living with other relatives as they wait for things to normalise before they start repair works.

Be ready for widespread heavy rain, flooding and damaging winds as Tropical Depression 05F is expected to develop into a cyclone early tomorrow as it heads towards Fiji.
TDO5F is located midway between Fiji and Vanuatu or about 550 kilometres West North West of Nadi.
The Nadi Weather Office says the system is currently moving North East at about 15 kilometres per hour and is expected to track South East towards Fiji in the next 24 hours.

Regional students from Papua New Guinea had every reason to celebrate as they proudly received their short course certificates from Fiji National University’s (FNU), Fiji Maritime Academy (FMA) last Friday.
The Bridge Resource Management (BRM) for Nautical Science and the Engine Room Resource Management (ERM) courses complete all the requirements necessary for the 21 final-stage students to appear for their oral examination from the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF).
FMA chief executive officer, Mahesa Abeynayake, congratulated the Marine Engineering and Nautical Science students for their perseverance in completing the programme away from their home and families.

Exploited Indonesian Fishers To Be Repatriated; Vessel De-Listed From MSC-Certification

Following the public highlighting on 16 January by Human Rights at Sea (HRAS) of the case of two exploited Indonesian fishers of the Chinese-owned, Fijian-flagged He Shun 38 (No.00359) vessel, both crew are reported as being repatriated to Indonesia on Thursday 28th January with some wages paid. Further, the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) has reported to HRAS that the Fiji Fishing Industry Association (FFIA) has de-listed the He Shun from MSC-Certification.

More than 140 fishermen in Nadi have formed an association with the aim to form a co-operative.
Nadi Fishermen’s Association president Usman Ali said the members had been struggling to find stable income in the face of new regulations and growing competition.
“We want to set up a network for our members to allow us to be self-sufficient,” he said.
“Right now there are so many fishermen that are facing economic challenges brought about by COVID19 and a lot of them are living below the poverty line.
