Kaduna Thrown into Darkness as NLC Begins Strike

Emmanuel Addeh in Abuja The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) yesterday confirmed the shutting down of its operations in Kaduna state, throwing the north central state into total darkness. The federal government-owned company noted that it was compelled to comply with the warning strike action called by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) after an analysis of apparent threats to its power assets in the state. A statement by the General Manager, Public Affairs of the company, Mrs Ndidi Mbah, made available in Abuja yesterday, while apologising for the blackout, noted that the TCN had turned down earlier demands for a shutdown, but noted that it later caved in to protect its assets from being compromised which will affect nationwide power supply.

After 24 hours darkness, Kaduna residents get electricity but for 15 minutes

The strike commenced at midnight of Sunday. However, a statement issued on Monday evening, the Head, Corporate Communication of Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company, Abdulazeez Abdullahi, apologised to residents of Kaduna over power outage. The statement read: “The management of Kaduna Electric again expresses its deepest regrets over the persisting power outage being experienced in Kaduna State. The management empathises with and apologise to individuals, families, groups and businesses who rely on its services daily and are currently facing inconvenience due to its withdrawal.” It expressed hope that the conflicting parties would resume discussions to allow normalcy return as soon as possible.

Power outage as national grid collapses May 12 Advertisement Ndidi Mbah, spokesperson of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), said there is ongoing effort to fully restore electricity on the grid. “The Transmission Company of Nigeria hereby states that at about 11.01 am today, 12th of May, 2021, there was a total system collapse of the grid, as a result of voltage collapse at some parts of the grid,” Mbah said. “TCN commenced grid recovery immediately after the collapse, from Shiroro Generating Station to Katampe TS, Abuja through the Shiroro – Katampe line at 11:29 am, and also through Delta Generating Station to Benin Transmission Substation and has reached Osogbo and parts of Lagos.
