North Carolina averages 28 tornadoes per year, unfortunately leading to generally around two fatalities each year, too. Sadly, already in 2020, three lives have been lost to a tornado back in February with a strong EF-3 tornado that touched down in Ocean Isle Beach. These tornadoes are most likely during the spring months, but they are also possible again during the fall.

When severe weather becomes likely, the National Weather Service will issue either a Severe Thunderstorm Watch or a Tornado Watch. A Tornado Watch means that tornadoes are possible. During Tornado Watches, you should remain alert for approaching storms, watch the sky, and stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio, commercial radio or television for additional information. A Tornado Warning means that a tornado has been spotted or indicated by weather radar. When a Tornado Warning is issued for your area, you should take shelter immediately in the innermost room in your home.

JACKSON, Tenn. It’s Severe Weather Awareness Week in Tennessee. To prepare, Thelma Barker Elementary School paused class for a tornado drill.
“We’ve seen a lot of things happen this past school year and this year, so I feel like we need to be prepared and I’m very confident about Thelma Barker being prepared,” assistant principal Mia Neely said.
Thelma Barker has safety precautions in place due to windows and doors in the school, but they added even more precautions due to COVID-19 guidelines, like social distancing. Instead of students lining the hallways, they were assigned safer designated areas to take cover.
