AUBURN As more than 100 Poland Regional High School students prepared to graduate Friday night, it was nearly impossible for anyone to forget it was happening at an airport.
Behind the parking area, as friends and family of the graduates huddled in and around their cars, a full-size plane loomed over all.
Around the stage, smaller airplanes were parked here and there, near bland hangars, and who could overlook that graduation was happening in the middle of a runway at Auburn-Lewiston Municipal Airport?

It did not seem a big a deal last year when the Regional School Unit 16 board of directors decided it would not offer remote-only learning to students who did not have a solid reason for staying away from the classroom.
But it turns out the move pushed 74 students who had been on the district’s rolls to home-school, at least until the COVID-19 pandemic is brought under control across Maine.
Because the district relies in large part on state aid based on the number of students in the three-town school district, officials learned this spring RSU 16, which enrolls students from Mechanic Falls, Minot and Poland, is losing almost $500,000 in aid this year.

POLAND Administrators of RSU 16 school district decided Tuesday to drop the idea of students returning to five-days-a-week of in-person instruction until after summer break.
“The most prudent decision to make at this time is to stay the course for the remainder of the school year and plan for the full return of all our students in the fall,” said a joint letter posted on the district’s Facebook page by Superintendent Kenneth Healey and Assistant Superintendent Amy Hediger.
The move follows a week of heated debate within the three-town district Poland, Minot and Mechanic Falls as some pushed for students to switch to daily in-person classes and others urged officials to stick with the existing hybrid model that has most students studying remotely at least half the time.
