Lawmakers Voice Concerns Over Restrictions on Children s Museums

A bipartisan group of lawmakers is asking Gov. J.B. Pritzker to reevaluate how children’s museums are allowed to operate in Illinois. Republican state Sen. Jason Barickman along with state Sen. Dave Koehler and state Rep. Kelly Burke, both Democrats, have sent a letter to the governor outlining their concerns with the restrictions on children’s museums. Under existing rules, museum directors say they cannot reopen to the public until Phase 5 of the Restore Illinois plan because they offer primarily hands-on exhibits. “The governor needs to fix this,” Barickman said. “He’s created these problems and the result is that some of these children’s museums are at risk of being entirely shutdown, bankrupt in effect.”

Children s Discovery Museum of the Desert in Rancho Mirage has new CEO

Cindy Burreson will transition from interim director to full-time CEO of the Children’s Discovery Museum of the Desert in Rancho Mirage starting Monday. The museum has been closed more than a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Some online programming was offered at the start of the pandemic, but on Nov. 30, the board announced that the facility would remain shuttered indefinitely and its 23 employees laid off due to revenue shortfalls due to reduced admissions, memberships and children’s day camps. The museum board on Thursday announced Burreson’s appointment as the 30-year-old nonprofit begins a comprehensive overhaul of exhibits and programing, working toward a safe reopening in 2022.
