Canadian’s art stands in for Brooklyn’s Nativity December 18, 2020 Angels Unawares as its Nativity this year. Schmalz’s replica of the sculpture the original sits in the Vatican’s St. Peter’s Square was unveiled Dec. 8 in Brooklyn, N.Y., by Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio. It’s placed in front of the diocese’s public Christmas tree at Grand Army Plaza, sitting in place of the traditional Nativity creche in front of the historic Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch, in the middle of Brooklyn’s busiest traffic circle. Schmalz’s work depicts a raft packed with more than 140 migrants and refugees representing the diverse waves of immigration through history. There are Jews fleeing Nazi Germany, a Polish woman running from the communist regime, a Cherokee on the Trail of Tears, an Irish boy escaping the potato famine and the Holy Family of Nazareth. In her current position as Assistant Director of Student Engagement at the Honors College, Lysette works toward addressing social issues including homelessness, immigration, poverty and public health. She has created numerous programs for students to learn and practice cultural humility. Lysette is from California, but considers Tucson home. She earned her BA in Political Science from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. She served in the U.S. Peace Corps in the Philippines. She completed her MA and her PhD in October 2020 from the University of Arizona. Her research focuses on transnational education, online learning and cultural humility. He was honored at IAOTP’s 2019 Annual Awards Gala, which was held at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas, where he received the Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Lester will accept this recognition and be inducted into the exclusive Hall of Fame at IAOTP’s Annual Awards Gala this Spring.

On Nov. 24, St. John’s University announced it had elected him to be its 18th president. His new job began on Monday, Feb. 1. But Father Shanley, a Dominican friar, grew up in Warwick, a suburb of Providence, R.I. home of Providence College, where he spent four years as a student, earning a history degree in 1980. Later, Father Shanley served 15 years as the college’s president, gaining notoriety by improving campus facilities, increasing the faculty, and building a more diverse student body. He is the college’s 12th and longest-serving president.
