Loyola Maryland, other Catholic colleges will require COVID-19 vaccinations in fall

WASHINGTON (CNS) As Catholic colleges grapple with how to reopen in the fall, many, including Loyola Maryland University and Mount St. Mary’s University, are already saying they will require their students to be vaccinated for COVID-19 and some schools also are mandating that staff and faculty members be vaccinated.
“Our goal is simple and twofold: to provide a COVID-safe environment in which our students, faculty and staff can pursue our mission; and to help protect the health and safety of our off-campus neighbors,” said Jesuit Father Joseph McShane, president of Fordham University, in an April 16 letter to the college community explaining that all students need to be vaccinated –“with some considerations for medical and religious exemptions” by the start of the fall semester.

An East Bay priest who died in 2012 – six years after retiring as the longest serving priest within the Diocese of Oakland – is accused in a new lawsuit of raping a young boy on multiple occasions between 1972 and 1974.
The accusation comes as part of a wave of new lawsuits hitting Catholic dioceses across the state, made possible by a recent law opening a three-year window for new civil cases based on older allegations previously barred by the statute of limitations. Attorneys involved in those cases say more than 700 new accusers have come forward with allegations against Northern California dioceses alone since last year, and they expect more to follow.

Right here at NCR, I want to call attention to an article that has been updated, and the update is really important. Alexander Thompson wrote about the fact that many of the nation s best colleges and universities, Catholic and non-Catholic alike, are requiring that their students get vaccinated in order to return to campus in the fall. The update regards my alma mater, the Catholic University of America, where President John Garvey has declined to issue a requirement. Hard not to wonder if his reluctance has anything to do with the fact that one of the university s star conservative professors, Catherine Pakaluk, is a leader in the effort to refuse the vaccine because its development involved stem cell lines originally derived from an aborted fetus.
