To a certain degree politicians are always campaigning. That is why they send us glossy mail pieces keeping us up to date on all the good stuff they claim to be doing. They are like the suck-up employee who sends status reports the boss didn’t ask for.
It shouldn’t concern any of us if any party other than the Liberals are spending their own campaign money on an unannounced election, but it should concern us that the party with access to the government jet and cheque book, as they say, is campaigning.
The scuttlebutt these days is an Aug. 9 announcement, to give us something else to think about while the American tourists we have missed over the past 18 months bring their money across the border.

OTTAWA – When Mary Simon walked into the Senate chamber to be sworn in as Governor General of Canada there were not the usual musical instruments, no bagpipes, no herald’s trumpet, no string quartet.
A simple Inuit drum played by Elder David Serkoak sounded a steady rhythm as Simon entered the Senate chamber with dignitaries looking on.

Serkoak’s drum was among the many signs that this ceremony, and this Governor General, would be different from the 29 people who have held the job before her.

In the corner of the chamber a Qulliq, an Inuit oil lamp, burned as she took her oath of office and officially became the Queen’s representative in Canada. She was greeted outside the building by a group of Indigenous drummers and she gave her speech partially in Inuktitut.
