Article content Many will remember a time when multiculturalism in Canada was a major policy issue for both federal and provincial politicians. We had a federal multicultural council, on which I served for many years. We had a multiculturalism minister. To me, multiculturalism was like a quilt: each square was a culture, but the quilt covered us all as Canadians. It was my role in multiculturalism that led then-prime minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau, in 1975, to ask me to head a new approach to a national holiday, which later become Canada Day. We focused on multiculturalism. People from different cultures were asked to bring food to Vincent Massey Park. Each culture was also asked to bring a dance that could be done on the grass where others could join. The idea was that if folks ate together and danced together, they were less likely to kill one another. More than 70 cultures participated.
