Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe – along with five other premiers – has written a letter to the Prime Minister to ask Ottawa to get involved in the effort to save air traffic control towers in several cities.
REGINA The union representing air traffic controllers said layoff notices have been handed the entire staff of 10 controllers at the Regina Airport. Last month, more than 100 air traffic controllers received layoff notices across Canada, according to a release from the Canadian Air Traffic Control Association (CATCA). It said the layoffs will affect service at four area control centres in Gander, Moncton, Montreal and Edmonton, and at air traffic control towers in St-Jean, Que., Windsor, Sault Ste. Marie, Regina, Fort McMurray, Prince George and Whitehorse. “We understand that NAV Canada has seen a significant decline in revenue due to the pandemic and it needs to find efficiencies, but we can’t allow public safety to be compromised,” CATCA President and CEO Doug Best said.

To say the aviation industry in Gander has taken a hit during the COVID-19 pandemic would be an understatement.
Since the pandemic took hold last March, the central Newfoundland town has seen airlines pull out of the Gander International Airport, followed by considerable job losses.
At peak times, the airport sees flights from various parts of Canada and the world.
In a news release Thursday morning, the town indicated the aviation sector in Gander has seen 290 jobs lost, which accounts for $25 million in lost wages for people in the town and the surrounding area.
