France s threat to Jersey over Brexit fishing row disproportionate

France and UK in new fishing row over Channel Islands waters

The French government said on Monday that it considers null and void new British requirements for fishing around the Channel Islands. The UK published on Friday a list of 41 vessels equipped with Vessel Monitoring Systems (VMS) and authorised to fish in Jersey s waters since Saturday. This list is accompanied by new requirements which have not been agreed, discussed or notified beforehand, the French Ministry of the Sea told AFP. These consist mainly of new fishing zones, the number of days fishermen can spend in these waters and what gear they re allowed to fish with. We consider that if new requirements for sea areas or fishing gear are integrated into the licences, even though they have not been notified to the European Commission, they are null and void, the ministry added.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada and commercial prawn fishery industry work

From: Fisheries and Oceans Canada Today, the Honourable Bernadette Jordan, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans, and the Canadian Coast Guard, confirmed her support for an interim protocol that would allow harvesters to freeze their catch, a process commonly known as “tubbing.” This Protocol, developed by the Pacific Prawn Fishermen’s Association will help prawn harvesters ensure that their catch, including catch frozen in tubs, is readily available for inspection by Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) Fishery Officers and legally available for sale. Vancouver, British Columbia – The Government of Canada understands how important the Pacific prawn fishery is to British Columbia’s economy and culture. The Government will continue to manage the fishery responsibly and sustainably, and support the harvesters whose income depend on it.
