42 years ago today,
Eric Clapton played a sold-out show at the Civic Center. The Backless Tour came to Portland on May 26, 1979. This was the Guitar God s first time at the CCCC. Blues great McKinley Morganfield best known as Muddy Waters, was also on the bill.
It was extra special for Maine Clapton fans as this trip to Northeast New England was a two-night stand. The first performance happened in my hometown at the Augusta Civic Center the evening before.
I remember being very envious to say the least, of one my buds whose parents allowed him to go. You see, we were 12-year-olds at the time.
Blimp Time-Hop: The First Bob Seger Concert At The Civic Center
Stranger in Town had only been out for just over a week.
Major classics like Hollywood Nights and Old Time Rock N’ Roll were brand-spankin new songs on the set-list.
This was his second studio album with the Silver Bullet Band.
According to the RIAA, it went platinum within a month of it being released. That’s ONE MILLION copies sold inside just 30 days…unbelievable!
So, it’s really no surprise that Blimpsters sold-out the CCCC for his first appearance there on May 17, 1978. It was surely had to be a night of rock-n-roll ecstasy that Portland, Maine will never forget.
