NCS Intercepts Tramadol, Contraband worth N100m

Eromosele Abiodun The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Federal Operations Unit, Zone ‘C’ Owerri has announced that it intercepted tramadol and other contraband goods with a duty paid value (DPV) of N99.82 million between April and June this year. The command in a statement revealed that five suspects were arrested in connection to the seizures which included: 45 rolls containing 4,500 sachets of 225mg of royal brand of tramadol, 210 bags of 50kg foreign parboiled rice, 18 parcels of Indian Hemp, 19, 725 sachets of dizapam tablet, 98 bales of used clothing, 220 cartons of foreign tomatoes paste, 12 cartons of foreign Johnson soap, 240 pieces of used tyres, 668 pairs of used shoes, among others.

  The Federal Operations Unit (Zone C) of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), has seized contraband items valued over ₦1.2 billion in Owerri, the Imo State capital. Briefing journalists in the state on Wednesday, the Customs Area Controller (CAC), Comptroller Yusuf Lawal, said the seizure was made from January to March. The items which included foreign parboiled rice, frozen poultry products, drugs, second-hand clothing, live ammunition, soaps, exotic cars, were intercepted in states of the South-South and South-East, which covers Zone C. “Following our anti-smuggling drives, between January to March 2021, we have intercepted various contraband within our areas of jurisdiction which covers South-South/South-East zones with a duty paid value of ₦1,280,885,011,” he said.

The cartridges, said to have been intercepted on “credible and timely intelligence” on December 13, 2020 along Nwezenyi Ikom Road in Cross River State, were concealed in other goods and household items in a Toyota Sienna passenger vehicle. The unit also intercepted various contraband items with a duty paid value (DPV) of N378.8 million between November 23rd and December 27th, 2020. The unit also recovered N7.6 million from demand notices (DNs) on general goods from the seaports that had evaded the right duties through false declaration or transfer of value, bringing everything to approximately N386.3 million for the month under review.

TODAY January 7, 2021 The Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit, Zone ‘C’ Owerri, said it has intercepted 5,200 live ammunition (cartridges of 30GR 70mm Calibre) and various contraband with a duty paid value (DPV) worth over N386 million between November 23 and December 27, 2020, having intensified its anti-smuggling operations. The Controller of the Unit, Comptroller Yusuf Lawal, stated this development in a press statement issued by the Unit’s Public Relations Officer, Jerry Attah, said that the Unit also recovered N7.558 million from demand notices on general goods that tried to cut corners from seaports in the guise of false declaration, transfer of value, and shortchange in duty payment, making a cumulative sum of N386.309 million within the month under review.
