(CTU / A4AI), Press Release May 10th, 2021 The Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU), represented by Secretary General Rodney Taylor, and the Alliance for Affordable Internet (A4AI), represented by Executive Director Sonia Jorge, signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Wednesday 5th May 2021.    The signing marks their commitment to coordinate efforts and promote joint activities with the goal of expanding meaningful and affordable Internet access through policy and regulatory reform.    The scope of this collaboration will include hosting presentations, seminars and hands-on workshops to support government officials to modernise their policy frameworks to achieve universal affordable and meaningful connectivity in the Caribbean region, leaving no one behind. Various In light of the importance of addressing the digital divide in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Sustainable Development Goals, the President of the General Assembly has convened a one-day High-level Thematic Debate on Digital Cooperation and Connectivity on 27 April 2021. In this letter, we call on governments, industry, multilateral institutions, civil society, and international financial institutions to close the digital divide by putting people at the centre of our approach to achieving meaningful connectivity for everyone.    In order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, we need to accelerate concerted action at all levels to close the digital divide, especially the gender digital gap. The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed the deep disparities in access to affordable and meaningful connectivity.

Human-centered connectivity at the United Nations H.E. Mr. Volkan Bozkir, President of the UN General Assembly, organized the UN’s first-ever High-Level Thematic Debate on Connectivity and Digital Cooperation. My topline conclusions from yesterday’s event are: The human costs of the digital divide must be addressed as we build back from the pandemic, and Stakeholders from governments, private sector, international organizations and civil society need to work together to end the digital divide by 2030.
