Philadelphia nearing 500 homicides this year as 2020 draws to close
Updated Dec 30, 2020;
With just two days left in 2020, Philadelphia is approaching 500 homicides for the year.
As of Tuesday evening, the city was just shy of the grim milestone with 494 homicides, Action News 6 ABC is reporting.
That is a number the city has not seen since 1990.
“We’ve seen things we haven’t seen in almost three decades,” Inspector Derrick Wood, of Southwest Detectives Division, told 6 ABC.
By comparison, 2019 saw 356 homicides, and the highest year before that was in 2007 with 391, reports indicate.
“Most people in Philadelphia are good people. It’s the small minority of people that are committing the crimes,” Wood told the station.
