British police have begun employing drones to monitor political protests throughout the country, as campaigners warn that the increasingly heavy-handed tactics employed by the police may be used to “silence dissent”.
A freedom of information request from the UK Drone Watch campaign group found that police across the country have begun using drones to surveil protests.
Police forces in Surrey, Cleveland, Staffordshire, Gloucestershire and West Midlands, as well as the Devon and Cornwall and Avon and Somerset forces, were all found to have used drones during protests,
The Guardianreported.
Protesters monitored by the police with drones included anti-lockdown, Black Lives Matter, Extinction Rebellion activists as well as one so-called ‘extreme-right protest’.

The San Luis Obispo Police Department is changing the way it responds to peaceful protests after a review of a Black Lives Matter rally that ended in violence.
A nearly 100-page report, called an After-Action Review (AAR), includes 10 action items for the San Luis Obispo Police Department after tear gas was used to disperse a Black Lives Matter protest on June 1, 2020.

Last summer millions of young people took to the streets across the country after the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. This past summer definitely made a lot of people put into perspective, kind of moving this very elitist form of, like, being an activist and organizer, and people kind of seeing that it s more attainable, said Alycia Kamil of GoodKidsMadCity.
This new generation is carrying on the Civil Rights Movement.

When the border finally opens, Priscilla Brough says she s going to cross into Detroit and hug the first American she sees. But the first American I ll see will be the border guard and I m sure he won t appreciate it like, hey, remember me? she said with a laugh.
Brough has been taking the bus across the border by herself since she was a child to visit her dad, who lived in Michigan. Over the years, her relationship with Detroit has deepened and she has gone over seeking new thrills from the city s rich music scene to its telling street art.
