Local animal groups vie for control of city pound

Local animal groups vie for control of city pound Susan DeVilder The Star Courier KEWANEE  Which organization will receive the contract to operate the city pound could be decided at the next Kewanee City Council meeting scheduled for May 24.  Both Friends of the Animals and the Henry County Humane Society/Kewanee have submitted bids for a three-year contract, with the option for two additional one-year extensions. The request for bids was announced by Kewanee Police Chief Nicholas Welgat in April with a deadline for responses due May 5.  The decision was expected to be decided at the city council meeting on May 10, but City Councilman Chris Colomer experienced a medical issue and left the meeting, which postponed the vote. At the time, Mayor Gary Moore called the decision to award the pound “too important to make without participation from the full council.”

This Mother s Day, how a Central Illinois farming family juggles it all

PHYLLIS COULTER Illinois Farmer Today LAURA, Ill. — When Eleanor Basehoar was a little girl, instead of watching cartoons, she was out helping her dad on the farm as he worked with the equipment or the cattle. But she still never expected to be a pig farmer today. With her four daughters, she leads an operation with 2,480 hogs. Together they grow corn and soybeans, raise a few cattle for a local meat market and are entertained by some alpacas in the barnyard in Laura, Illinois, in Peoria County.   All that while holding a full-time microbiology job at the U.S. Department of Agriculture Research Service laboratory in Peoria for more than 30 years.

How Illinois can jumpstart a heartland manufacturing revival

Star Courier The stars are aligned for Illinois to become a hot spot in the revival of manufacturing across our great American heartland. For example, I propose a really big, transformative, federal-state-private-sector partnership that would create a cutting-edge, computer chip manufacturing and research facility on Arsenal Island, which straddles the Illinois-Iowa Quad Cities.  “But how are the stars aligned, Jim?” you might ask.  I respond: The Biden infrastructure plan includes $50 billion or more for a desperately needed American manufacturing and research renaissance. Illinois is a natural place for such a rebirth. We have in the University of Illinois, Northwestern University, the University of Chicago and other research centers probably the greatest concentration of engineering and computer science firepower of any state, with perhaps the exception of Massachusetts and California.
