The Hispanic Alliance is receiving financial support from an arts organization and online donors after Greenville County Council voted this week to withhold a $7,500 grant that the group had sought to promote the Wings of the City sculpture exhibit.
The Metropolitan Arts Council announced Thursday that it is providing the Hispanic Alliance with a $3,500 grant to promote the Wings of the City exhibit, which consists of nine bronze statues placed in Falls Park and the Peace Center. This exhibit is an outstanding addition to the cultural landscape of Greenville, and the Hispanic Alliance is to be commended for its efforts to bring these beautiful sculptures to our city, said Alan Ethridge, the council s executive director. It is also MAC’s privilege to take a stance against censorship.
Morgenroth said Tuesday that the bronze sculptures bring a touch of culture and enrich the park.
Greer resident Allison Saravia offered a starkly different assessment of the exhibit when she spoke at Monday night s Greenville City Council meeting. She questioned whether the nudity depicted in the sculptures is just art. I’m keeping myself pure for marriage, and that 100% includes keeping my eyes pure. I thank God somebody warned me about the statues, because if I had gone downtown unknowingly, that would have robbed me of my innocence, and you would have been responsible, Saravia told council members. You have no idea how profoundly that would crush my spirit. Do you care at all that you’re making hundreds and more people cry bitter tears?
