Prison Guard Charged for Allegedly Smuggling Pills in Rice Krispies Treats On 7/2/21 at 12:07 AM EDT A South Carolina correctional officer has been charged with allegedly smuggling pills into prison by concealing them inside Rice Krispies treats. The South Carolina Department of Corrections said Thursday that 43-year-old Marcy T. Shaffer had been arrested and charged with misconduct in office, possession of narcotics with intent to distribute and furnishing prisoners with contraband. Authorities say that Shaffer admitted to the crime and was fired after her arrest. The charges against her involve attempting to smuggle the pills into the institution in a Rice Krispies treat, a press release from the department states. The S.C. Department of Corrections reminds members of the public that after an arrest, the burden of proof is on the state to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt within a court of law.

2 South Carolina executions halted until firing squad formed

2 South Carolina executions halted until firing squad formed By MICHELLE LIU and MEG KINNARDJune 17, 2021 GMT COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) The South Carolina Supreme Court on Wednesday blocked the planned executions of two inmates by electrocution, saying they cannot be put to death until they truly have the choice of a firing squad option set out in the state’s newly revised capital punishment law. The high court halted this month’s scheduled executions of Brad Sigmon and Freddie Owens, writing that corrections officials need to put together a firing squad so that inmates can really choose between that or the electric chair. The state’s plans, the court wrote in an unanimous order, are on hold “due to the statutory right of inmates to elect the manner of their execution.”
