Three labourers working in a manhole without any safety gear died of asphyxiation in Ramanagaram, around 50 km from Bengaluru, on Friday morning. They were among five labourers working on a new Underground Drainage (UGD) line of the Ramanagaram City Municipal Council.

Krishnaraja MLA and former Minister S.A. Ramdas has tested positive for COVID-19.
The BJP leader took to Twitter to confirm that he has been contracted with the infection on Wednesday afternoon.
Earlier in the day, Mr. Ramdas had taken part in Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Jayanthi programme at Town Hall in which several elected representatives and senior officials had participated.
In a tweet, Mr Ramdas said: “I have tested positive for COVID-19 this afternoon. I’m fine and under treatment in a private healthcare centre. Need not worry. I request everyone who came in contact with me to get tested for the virus.”

National Safai Karmachari Commission Chairman M. Venkateshan has asked officials to send those who assault or abuse Pourakarmikas to jail.
He was speaking at a meeting with officials and Pourakarmika leaders at the Deputy Commissioner’s office here yesterday.
Pointing out that the problems of Pourakarmikas will be addressed, Venkateshan said that necessary steps will be taken for ensuring job security of Pourakarmikas, payment of school fee of Pourakarmika children, housing and free health services for Pourakarmikas and such other welfare measures. Stating that he will be meeting CM B.S. Yediyurappa in a couple of days to discuss Pourakarmika issues, he said that officials must ensure that Pourakarmikas are not deprived of any Government benefits.

MYSURU: “My son-in-law Narayan was harassed for over five months after he was forced to clean manholes. He was asked to do so even when he was down with fever,” said Mahadevi, his mother-in-law.
Narayan, 33, a pourakarmika working in Maddur Town Municipal Council, ended his life after penning a note, alleging harassment by two officials as the reason for his extreme step. It is alleged that Narayan, along with several other pourakarmikas, was made to clean manholes with bare hands.
