BOULDER, Colo. Small and independent breweries slowed down production for the first time ever in 2020. That s the first line in the Boulder-based Brewers Association s annual Craft Brewing Industry Production Report. Every year as we ve done since 1980s, we track the production (of) small and independent breweries in the United States. This year we measured that production down nine percent, said Bart Watson, the chief economist for the Brewers Association. That s the first decline we ve ever mentioned or ever measured and it means that it was a tough year for small brewers in the context of all the shifts that went on during COVID.

America’s brewing industry is not known for its diversity. In fact, “data reveals that all major demographic groups are underrepresented in the industry with the exception of men who happen to be white,” says
Jake Goodman, chief marketing officer for Greeley’s WeldWerks Brewing Co., is blunter: “For the longest time, the craft beer industry has been a bastion of bearded white dudes in flannels,” he says, referring to a 2018 study from the Brewers Association that found that 76.2 percent of non-manager production staff and 89 percent of brewers in the craft beer industry are white. “The lack of racial diversity is still incredibly stark.”

Obenchain didn t rule out some sort of public GABF gathering this year. We ll be exploring opportunities, and, if possible, there will be a public element, she says, noting that the BA, like other organizations, will have to wait to see if the COVID vaccine makes in-person events possible in 2021.
As for 2022, Obenchain believes there will be pent-up demand for large public festivals but she says the BA may reimagine what GABF will look like for its fortieth anniversary that year.
Registration for attendees of CBC, which is the largest craft-beer trade show in the country, will open in April; brewery registration for GABF begins in June. The awards will be announced on September 10.
