Move resolution on farmers rights: Punjab speaker to government | India News

CHANDIGARH:The issue of land acquisition for the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway resonated in the Punjab legislative assembly with speaker Rana KP Singh asking the state government to move a resolution or make a statement ensuring that the rights of farmers would be protected. The farmers are up in arms against “low compensation” being awarded for their agricultural land and houses to be acquired for the expressway. Those to be affected by land acquisition are also complaining that the proposed expressway would cut their land through two, leading to an accessibility problem for them. Punjab health minister Balbir Singh Sidhu too stated in the House that the farmers were being offered low compensation. On completion of the expressway, Sidhu said the farmers would face a lot of problems and would not be able to even water their fields due to accessibility issues.
