JAKARTA: The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) has designated 17 sites on Belitung Island, Bangka Belitung Islands province as global geoparks in recognition of their geological, biological, and cultural uniqueness.
“The meeting of the Unesco Global Geopark (UGGp) Council has declared that 17 geosites in Belitung Geopark meet the qualifications as new members of UGG,” Bangka Belitung Islands Governor Erzaldi Rosman Djohan disclosed in Pangkalpinang.
The 17 geosites include Juru Sebrang, Terong Tourism Village, Kuale Granite Mangrove Forest, Peramun Hill Granite Forest, Tanjung Kelayang Trias Granite, Batu Bedil Trias Granite Rock, Nam Salu Open Pit, Lumut Hill, Batu Pulas Granite Rock, Cendil Heat Forest, Tebat Rasau Cenozoic Swamp, Burung Mandi Cretaceous Granidiorite, Siantu Pillow Lava, Tajam Mountain, Baginda Rocks, Punai Beach

Last week saw the celebration of World Art Day, created by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) in 2019, aims to promote the development, diffusion and enjoyment of art. Audrey Azoulay, director general of Unesco, said: Bringing people together, inspiring, soothing and sharing. these are the powers of art, the importance of which has been made emphatically obvious during the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic. With hundreds of thousands of people directly affected by the virus and billions more either in lockdown or battling the pandemic on the front lines, this World Art Day is a timely reminder that art has the power to unite and connect in times of crisis.

Philippine representative and DepEd Undersecretary Nepomuceno Malaluan during the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization s (Unesco’s) high-level ministerial online conference recently, shared that education in the country had to make a radical shift in education delivery towards remote learning due to the Covid-19.
In his report, Usec. Malaluan noted that Covid-19 has compelled education to innovate and mobilize resources towards transformation, citing the Department’s blended learning initiatives such as the DepEd Commons and DepEd TV.

Gemma Ledesma, newly installed regional director of Department of Education (DepEd)-Eastern Visayas, lauded the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) and Korea International Cooperation Office (Koica) during the groundbreaking ceremony of Girls Education Center in Palo, Leyte on Wednesday, April 14, 2021. We see this facility as one that has been needed for years. We are excited because we know for sure that this type of support will increase the motivation of our Alternative Learning System (ALS) learners to finish the program, said Ledesma.
The construction of Girls Education Center is part of the Better Life for Out-of-School Girls to Fight Against Poverty and Injustice in the Philippines project funded by Koica, and implemented by Unesco together with the DepEd.
