As COVID-19 vaccinations rise and cases drop, Victor Valley College announced this week that in-person campus services will reopen to students and the public in May after being closed for more than a year during the pandemic.
While classes will continue being taught online or remotely for the Spring semester, in-person student services will become available Monday, May 10, VVC officials said in a statement released Saturday.
“Safety will be our utmost concern and guidelines provided by the state of California will be strictly followed,” VVC Superintendent/President Dr. Dan Walden said.

California higher education leaders are celebrating President Joe Biden’s signing of the American Rescue Plan Act and the resulting $5 billion that is expected to benefit the state’s colleges and students. Some public university campuses in the state will each receive more than $100 million, with CSU Northridge expected to be on top with about $131 million.
Half of the funds are supposed to directly help students with college costs and basic needs including housing and health care. The other half will help schools defray lost revenue due to declining enrollments, cover costs of shifting to online learning, and help pay for Covid-19 testing, vaccinations and related safety measures.

A college education undeniably serves as a road to social mobility, but particularly in the landscape of COVID-19, expensive course materials are a roadblock. As students of the University of California system, which considers itself a proponent of educational equity, it is imperative that we take action to eliminate the obstacles that get in the way of accessible education.
The UC has already taken considerable and commendable steps to heighten accessibility by implementing open access journals. Now, it’s time for them to extend that accessibility to other course materials by implementing open textbooks, which are peer-reviewed and faculty written under an open license.
