Tamaki Appointed to Task Force to Study Reparations for African Americans

SACRAMENTO – As the country continues to confront a history of racial injustice, deeply rooted in the legacy of slavery and systemic racism, Gov. Gavin Newsom on May 7 appointed five individuals to serve on the newly formed Task Force to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African Americans.
The formation of this task force was made possible by the governor’s signing of AB 3121, authored by then-Assemblymember Shirley Weber (D-San Diego), which established a nine-member task force to inform Californians about slavery and explore ways the state might provide reparations.
Californians might be getting a one-time $600 stimulus check payment soon. Depending on your 2020 tax returns filing date and eligibility, residents might receive $600 to $1200 stimulus payment.

The Californian Franchise Tax Board (FTB) is in the process of distributing a round of $600 stimulus checks to recipients of the
California Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC). The direct payments are part of the Golden State Stimulus bill that was passed in February by Gov. Gavin Newsom.
The eligibility requirements for the Californian stimulus checks were notably narrower than that of the three rounds of national payments that have been sent during the pandemic.
With the May 17 tax filing deadline just days away, low-income families in the region are being offered free help to prepare their taxes and obtain tax credits which could be as much as $4200.
United Way of Ventura County offering free tax assistance
VENTURA, Calif. – As the tax deadline approaches on May 17, United Way of Ventura County is offering free tax assistance to the community.
United Way invites all low-income families to drop off their tax documents and volunteers will be able to review them for free. It is available through Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, and it monitored through the IRS.
United Way is asking filers to make photocopies of their tax documents or bring in their W2 forms. The organization is hoping families will file their taxes on time to take advantage of the different credits that are available.
