Studying Earthquakes Through Eyewitnesses Can Be Tricky
Release Date:
January 29, 2021
Scientists rely on seismometers and eyewitness accounts to identify an earthquake’s location, time and magnitude. A new study explores how the latter can be limited by socioeconomic factors, which can create biases in datasets that scientists use to characterize seismic hazards and coordinate emergency response.
As early American pioneers forged a long, arduous path across the country during the Westward Expansion, an earthquake hit what is now the State of Oklahoma on October 22, 1822.
“The trembling and vibrating were so severe as to cause door and window shutters to open and shut, hogs in pens to fall and squeal, poultry to run and hide, the tops of weeds to dip, [and] cattle to lowe [sic],” the Cherokee Advocate reported.

Power outages reported across Sacramento region, SMUD says
The storm, as advertised, has made its presence felt across the capital region Tuesday evening. Just after 11 p.m. about 76,000 customers of the Sacramento Municipal Utility District were without power, mostly due to power lines being knocked down by tree branches or the wind. A number of outages were being sparked by blowing transformers as well, according to the utility.
5 p.m. UPDATE
The eastbound and westbound ramps from Highway 44 onto Interstate 5 in Redding have reopened following northbound I-5 congestion, according to the California Department of Transportation.
Traffic was slowing about 5 p.m. on northbound I-5 near La Moine just south of Pollard Flat in Shasta County due to a vehicle recovery, Caltrans said.
Meanwhile, Highway 3 remained closed at Scott Mountain due to the large amount of snow that fell.
Caltrans says its workers are working hard to get Scott Mountain open in Trinity County.
12:40 p.m. UPDATE
Caltrans says as of 12:40 p.m., the chain check has been lifted for northbound Interstate 5 at the Fawndale exit 10 miles north of Redding.
