By Rachel Damelio photocredit: gettyimages The California Department of Motor Vehicles just announced that residents applying for a REAL ID can now provide their Social Security Number without needing documented proof that they have one. In response to the 2001 9/11 terrorist attacks, the REAL ID act was passed to establish a minimum set of standards for state driver s licenses and ID cards. This law also prevents federal agencies from accepting identification cards that don t meet those standards. In 2023, the DHS will require a federally approved document, like a valid passport or a REAL ID to board flights within the U.S. and enter military bases or other secured federal buildings. Applicants had to provide a Social Security Card or W-2 to prove that they have a Social Security Number, but now the number is the only thing needed.
