Instructional Assistant Chantale McConnell rose to the challenge of guiding cohorts of up to 20 Kindergarten students through a very unusual year at Top of the World Elementary School.
She still sees little smiles underneath her students’ face masks as they sit behind plexiglass mounted on their desks to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Inevitably, a student will break down and cry for their mom. McConnell is there to help make them feel happy at school.
“The one thing that’s hard for me, because I’m very involved physically with the kids, I’m a big hugger,” she said. “That’s been the hardest thing for me, not being able to hug.”

DUBLIN, CA The Dublin Unified School District Board of Trustees hopes to have a new superintendent selected by May 11, ready to work for the coming school year.
The board has begun its search process and plans to work with the community to identify the next superintendent. Daniel Moirao is currently serving as the acting superintendent after former Superintendent Dave Marken abruptly resigned during a board meeting in April, citing discord with the board members.
The board is currently accepting applications for its Community Interview Committee, the district said in a letter to the schools community. The committee will interview candidates after the board has conducted an initial round of interviews and narrowed down the pool of candidates.

The Carlsbad City Council met Tuesday and gave final approval, 4-1, to its hotel employee recall rights ordinance. Reports were presented on the city’s 2019-20 annual financial audit results and on upcoming municipal service reviews by the Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO) of the city of Carlsbad and Carlsbad Municipal Water District. Marissa Steketee was appointed to the Parks & Recreation Commission.

The Del Mar City Council met in closed session Monday to discuss litigation. In open session, the council discussed its 6th Cycle Housing Element and the penalties involved for not fulfilling its obligations, which could include reduced state funding, increased legal costs and financial penalties, and less local control over development. Planning Department staff also answered questions submitted by the community about various housing sites and alternatives.
A proposal to censure a trustee on the Fairfax School District board failed at Tuesday s night s meeting in a split 2-2 vote. The censure proposal, commissioned by an independent attorney, claimed trustee Palmer Moland abused his power and harassed and bullied staff â from classified workers all the way up to the superintendent â throughout the district.
The censure resolution recommended that Moland resign or hire a leadership development coach. The resolution, if it had passed, would have removed Moland from any committee or leadership position on the board and barred him from representing the district in any official capacity until he completed district-approved training in governance, school laws and regulations.
