The stylish crowd that usually enjoys watching the Oscars at the Academy of Friends gala in San Francisco won t be noshing on hors d oeuvres or sipping bubbly this year. The event has been scrapped due to the COVID pandemic.
As of Thursday, April 15, AOF s website and social media feeds had yet to reflect the cancellation. The online channels had not been updated in months.
Meanwhile, questions remain about the future of the fundraiser. The president of the organization s board of directors told the Bay Area Reporter he hopes the fundraiser can be held in 2022. But its returning will be dependent on the status of the health crisis, he noted.

La La Land was wrongly named best picture – an Academy Award remains the ultimate prize in the movie industry.
It’s a validation of excellence that comes with more than 90 years of history, celebrity and glamour – as emotional as winning an Olympic gold medal for everyone from famous directors and actors to unknown visual effects technicians, make-up artists and the creators of animated shorts.
Part of the cachet is mixing with the movie elite at a ceremony in Los Angeles every February or March (moved to April this year because of the pandemic). But Oscars are also famously hard to win. Rosie Perez has film credits dating as far back as 1989, according to her IMDB profile. She is still very much active in the industry, with her latest venture being the 2020 television series “The Flight Attendant.” So, it came as a surprise when, during a recent sit-down, the Brooklyn native told Variety that she hadn’t been invited to the Academy Awards in over 25 years.
“Not even to sit in the audience, not to present, nothing and I’m a member. I love the Academy Awards. I cheer on my peers, but it hurts,” the 56-year-old expressed. “It’s like when your home team doesn’t ask you to come back into the stadium after you got up to bat and hit the home run.”
