Penn State to host discussions, concerts, activities for Black History Month

Here are virtual events happening across campus over the month. Through Feb. 28 Selma March incentive — Students can “run, walk, bike, row, elliptical or swim” 54 miles to honor the distance of the Selma marches that took place in March 1965. The event is hosted through Campus Recreation.  “Move for Your Health” — Fitness classes will be available to teach students “the importance of movement to a student’s health” as well as educating students on the health inequities the Black community faces. Monday, Feb. 1 The Eberly College of Science will feature stories from its Black students, faculty and alumni throughout the month. Additionally, the college will feature four virtual speakers as a part of the NOBCChE Chemistry Seminar Series until Feb. 22.

Penn State alumni invited to participate in Cooking Classic

Image: Patrick Mansell January 12, 2021 The first Penn State Cooking Classic  a series of hourlong webinars that aim to bring Penn State alumni together to learn cooking and related life skills will be held on Wednesday evenings from Jan. 20 to Feb. 10. The webinar topics will include smoking meats, coffee, healthy foods, specialty chocolate and wine. Cooking Classic programs begin at 7 p.m. ET and include:  Wednesday, Jan. 20 Pierogies, Pies and Pigs: Fresh From the Farm Show   Wednesday, Jan. 27  Cooking with Tech: Wings & Things   Wednesday, Feb. 3  Healthy Hints   Wednesday, Feb. 10  Mallo Cups and Merlot In addition to bringing together Penn State alumni, the webinars are intended to raise awareness of the food insecurity experiences of students across the Penn State system. Study suggests smart assistant design improvements for deaf users Despite the inherent challenges that voice-interaction may create, researchers at the Penn State College of Information Sciences and Technology recently found that deaf and hard-of-hearing users regularly use smart assistants like Amazon’s Alexa and Apple’s Siri in homes, workplaces and mobile devices. The work highlights a clear need for more inclusive design, and presents an opportunity for deaf and hard-of-hearing users to have a more active role in the research and development of new systems, according to Johnna Blair, an IST doctoral student and member of the research team.

Student Commencement Stories: August, December 2020

More than 1,100 Mavericks joined our alumni network on Friday, Dec. 18, during the December 2020 commencement ceremonies. Ruya Abubaker, a graduate of the College of Arts and Sciences, says I never felt out of place; like I was the only international student. That idea of knowing I’m not the only international student was very comforting. Paige Faber, earning degrees in Business Administration and Spanish, says that I would tell students to find something you’re really passionate about. Just be totally all-in. Chloe Romero, earning a degree from the College of Communication, Fine Arts, and Media, came to UNO from California. She says that I took a leap of faith and trusted my instincts and it did not lead me wrong. It has made me the woman that I am today.
