WIU Hosts Annual High School Art Exhibition and Awards - Western Illinois University News

December 21, 2020 MACOMB, IL – The Western Illinois University Department of Art and Design recently hosted its annual High School Art Exhibition and Awards, with work submitted by students from 10 regional high schools. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the competition was held virtually and was judged by WIU Professor Emeritus Julie Mahoney. She chose 100 works for the show from more than 270 entries, submitted by more than 100 students. The competition is sponsored by Blick Art Materials in Galesburg, the WIU Bookstore, the WIU Department of Art and Design and the College of Fine Arts and Communication. The winners of the 2020 HSAEA include: • Best in Show - $200 cash - Callie Lauderback Washington Community HS

Student Commencement Stories: August, December 2020

More than 1,100 Mavericks joined our alumni network on Friday, Dec. 18, during the December 2020 commencement ceremonies. Ruya Abubaker, a graduate of the College of Arts and Sciences, says I never felt out of place; like I was the only international student. That idea of knowing I’m not the only international student was very comforting. Paige Faber, earning degrees in Business Administration and Spanish, says that I would tell students to find something you’re really passionate about. Just be totally all-in. Chloe Romero, earning a degree from the College of Communication, Fine Arts, and Media, came to UNO from California. She says that I took a leap of faith and trusted my instincts and it did not lead me wrong. It has made me the woman that I am today.

Duquesne University cutting faculty to reduce costs

Duquesne University is moving forward with faculty cuts, informing some non-tenured instructors this week that their contracts would not be renewed. The university had announced measures to reduce faculty as early as Dec. 4, according to an email shared with the Tribune-Review. “As a first step, Duquesne has offered a comprehensive voluntary retirement incentive program to long-serving faculty,” the email reads. “As a second step, the university will not renew a subset of contracts of full-time, non-tenure track faculty and a few others who do not have tenure.”
