Panelists provide young female engineers strategies for success
Panelists of the Women in Engineering, Academics, and the Corporate World event provided FIU female engineering and computing students with strategies for success in a male-dominated field.

Many women who work in engineering continue to find they are the only female in the room. According to studies conducted by the Society of Women Engineers, only 13 percent of engineers in the workforce are women.
With a mission to empower current female engineering and computing students and close the gender gap, FIU’s Center for Diversity and Student Success in the College of Engineering & Computing (CEC) hosted the Women in Engineering, Academics, and the Corporate World virtual panel in March.

FIU receives grant to help increase representation in undergraduate computing
The “Best Practice” grant from the Center for Inclusive Computing at Northeastern University will allow the Knight Foundation School of Computing and Information Sciences to work toward making all students feel included while learning computing.

FIU has received a “Best Practice,” $625,000 grant from the Center for Inclusive Computing at Northeastern University to support the implementation of evidence-based approaches that quickly and significantly increase the representation of women in undergraduate computing.

This weekend, thousands of FIU students will celebrate the first in-person commencement ceremonies since the COVID-19 pandemic began. These graduates include some who have used what they learned in the classrooms to make a difference during the pandemic.
“This year’s graduates exemplify perseverance. Some have been on the front lines of the pandemic response making a difference to our COVID-stricken community and all of them overcame personal challenges to stay focused on their goals,” said FIU President Mark B. Rosenberg. “We are thrilled to see them graduate and be able to celebrate their achievements in person again.”
