PHOTO: RP ISLAMABAD: Federal Education Minister Shafqat Mahmood announced on Saturday that exams would be held on time, dispelling rumours that the ministry is cancelling exams. Speaking to the media, the minister reaffirmed the government’s policy of sticking with its decision to commence examinations across the country. The statement comes at the heels of recent protests held by students voicing their demands to cancel the examinations. A number of students were detained by the police on Thursday during a protest against matriculation and intermediate examinations outside the Higher Education Commission (HEC) office in Islamabad.

Intermediate exams to commence from July 10 - Newspaper

As per government policy, only exams for elective subjects will be conducted. The board’s spokesman, Arsalan Cheema, said all preparations had been completed and the board exams would be held for elective subjects only. On June 2, Education Minister Shafqat Mahmood said board exams for students of classes 9 and 10 would be held after July 10 only for elective subjects and mathematics, while exams for students of classes 11 and 12 would be held for elective subjects only. He said from July 10, 73,578 candidates will appear in the examinations; roll number slips have been dispatched to all candidates while roll number slips for regular students have been uploaded on their institutes’ portals. He said 255 examination centres had been established, 98 for male and 107 for female students while 20 joint examination centres had been established.
