Do everything possible to prevent a wildfire, but don t take ill-advised risks

Unsplash Pablo works as an electrician for an Eagle County company and like many of us, he is worried about tinder-dry forest conditions and megafires in the West. As he was driving to work one day, thinking about the possibility of another large fire striking the area, he happened on a different thought. All fires start small, so what if there was a way to hit them as they first start to spark? That simple notion convinced him to start carrying a fire extinguisher in his truck, and several of his co-workers are following suit. Chief Karl Bauer of the Eagle River Fire Protection District applauds Pablo’s motives, but admitted some concerns about his method. While Bauer said he would never discourage someone from having a fire extinguisher on hand, he voiced concerns about average people trying to use a fire extinguisher to put out a wildfire, even a small one.

Van Beek: Head out for National Night Out

National Night Out is an annual event, held on the first Tuesday in August, to celebrate community, safety and service. Across the nation, neighbors gather to enjoy an evening of good food, music, games, safety demonstrations, visits from various first responder organizations and simply great conversation with friends, old and new. For 37 years, law enforcement agencies have come together to create an evening under the stars that is filled with fun and games for the entire family. After a challenging year of limited social contact, this is an opportunity to reach out to those who, through it all, continued to serve and protect and did so with pride and a genuine desire to help their friends and neighbors. The uniform they wear represents the value they place upon creating a more caring place to live.

Recent rain has no impact on county drought conditions

Chris Dillmann/cdillmann@vaildaily.com Despite the recent onset of rain in Eagle County, drought conditions remain at historic levels, ranging from severe to exceptional across the region. Eagle County, along with almost all of Western Colorado, has been experiencing this drought cycle for over a year now. And conditions across the Western Slope remain dry enough that late last week, Gov. Jared Polis declared a drought emergency for 21 Western Colorado counties , including Eagle County. According to Becky Bolinger, the assistant state climatologist at the Colorado Climate Center, these conditions became severe late last summer and early fall due to a lack of monsoon moisture, no precipitation and very hot temperatures. And then, conditions spiraled from there.
