(Credit: Washtenaw County Sheriff s Office) ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office announced that it has forgiven $509,888 of outstanding debt incurred by 31,614 individuals while at Washtenaw County Jail. Debt is taken on when those incarcerated cannot afford to buy personal items from a commissionary, pay booking fees or pay for medical and dental services, among other things. The decision, made by Sheriff Jerry Clayton and supported by the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners, affects community members incarcerated between January 1, 2013, to December 31, 2020. “Our decision to eliminate this debt reflects our understanding of the stress and financial burden of incarceration,” said Clayton through a release.

The pair, both 18, were each charged with one count each of open murder, armed robbery, conspiracy to commit armed robbery and two counts of felony firearm, in connection with the shooting death of 21-year-old Brian Aldin Matthews III.

Brothers Mark and Gordie Comstock stood beside an Ann Arbor park sign in 2019, never dreaming they would spend the entire next year taking hundreds more just like it. Even months before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down most recreational activities, the Comstock brothers had decided to create their own sport of locating and traversing every park in Washtenaw County. The University of Michigan and Washtenaw County Health Department are recommending that all students living on or near the Ann Arbor campus stay in place at their campus-area addresses through Feb. 7.
