The 44-year-old mother estimates she spends $100 a month for her son to call her every other day from the Muskegon County Jail, which contracts with Securus Technologies to provide telecommunication services. Schaeffer says these conversations are central to maintaining their connection as her son serves a year-long jail sentence.
Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office forgives over $500,000 in jail debt

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office announced that it has forgiven $509,888 of outstanding debt incurred by 31,614 individuals while at Washtenaw County Jail.
Debt is taken on when those incarcerated cannot afford to buy personal items from a commissionary, pay booking fees or pay for medical and dental services, among other things.
The decision, made by Sheriff Jerry Clayton and supported by the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners, affects community members incarcerated between January 1, 2013, to December 31, 2020.
“Our decision to eliminate this debt reflects our understanding of the stress and financial burden of incarceration,” said Clayton through a release.

ANN ARBOR, MI – Two men accused of killing a man during a botched robbery at an Ypsilanti Township park a year ago will not be facing a jury.
James Solomon Warren and Stevie Lynn Brooks both entered no contest pleas to armed robbery and second-degree murder Jan. 27 before Washtenaw County Trial Judge Archie Brown, court records show.
The pair, both 18, were each charged with one count each of open murder, armed robbery, conspiracy to commit armed robbery and two counts of felony firearm, in connection with the shooting death of 21-year-old Brian Aldin Matthews III.
