  After weeks of debate and discussion, the White House and a bipartisan group of senators said on Wednesday that they had reached agreement on an infrastructure bill. The Senate voted later that day to take up the bill that would make far-reaching investments in the nation’s public works system, as Republicans joined Democrats in clearing the way for action. The $1 trillion package is far smaller than the $2.3 trillion plan that President Joe Biden had originally proposed and would provide about $550 billion in new federal money for public transit, roads, bridges, water and other physical projects over the next five years, according to a White House fact sheet. That money would be cobbled together through a range of measures, including “repurposing” stimulus funds already approved by Congress, selling public spectrum and recouping federal unemployment funds from states that ended more generous pandemic benefits early.
