Amazon announced today that it is donating $1.75 million to fund robotics and computer science programs at the new STEAM high school planned for downtown Syracuse. The $74 million regional high school is expected to open in fall 2022 in the former Central Tech High School building in downtown Syracuse. It is a joint project between the Syracuse school district, city of Syracuse and Onondaga County. It will be the first regional high school in Central New York.

That brings the number of active cases to 681. McMahon said he expected the increase, as families are returning from traveling during spring break. He said 32 are in the hospital with 5 in ICU. He alos announced that sadly a 64-year-old African Amercian male died in the past 24 hours. The positvity rate is1.5%, and 7 day average stands at 1.2 % He said if you got your shot last month at the drive thru clinci at Shoppingtown Mall, you will need to get your second does at a different location. McMahon said this Monday or Tuesday, April 13th,14th you will need to go to the OnCenter. They are moving the clinic due to the prosepct of bad weather.

Around 52% of the county’s adult population has received at least the first dose of the vaccine. The clinic at the OnCenter is administering six to nine thousand first doses a week, pharmacies have open appointments, and local colleges are planning clinics of their own. While these sites may still be busy now, Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon expects the county will soon shift their focus to serve under vaccinated communities. We really need to work with our community partners to get out there. We’ll start doing reverse 911 calls for pop-up clinics, walk-up pop-up clinics in neighborhoods. These are all things that we’re going to have to do and make it really easy for those who maybe don’t have hesitancy, they’re just busy, said McMahon.

Of the new cases, 95% involve people younger than 60, according to McMahon. And 85% involve people under 49. Plus, 10% of the new cases involve people who recently traveled. Overall, that shows that the people who’ve had access to the vaccine longer, namely older residents, are getting protection from the coronavirus, according to McMahon. Thirty-one people remain hospitalized, down one from Thursday. Four patients are in intensive care. “Happy to report NO new deaths,” McMahon wrote on social media.
