Dozens of people are believed to have contracted Covid-19 in hospital at Dorset County Hospital Trust, figures suggest. The British Medical Association said the NHS was already overstretched before the pandemic and warned bed capacity and staffing must be increased to control the spread of the virus in hospitals. Analysis of NHS England data shows that, between August 1 and March 21, 64 people were thought to have been infected with Covid-19 at Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, while being treated in hospital for other conditions. The highest number of such transmissions was recorded in January alone, when 51 people were believed to have been infected in hospital.

The figures are the number of infections per 100,000 people in the seven days up to and including December 9 for Dorset Council is 44.1. The case rate in the BCP Council area stands at 67.3. For comparison, the figure for England is 172. In terms of hospital patients with coronavirus, this is also falling. There were 88 coronavirus patients being treated in Dorset hospitals as of Tuesday, December 1. According to the latest figures from NHS England, University Hospitals Dorset Trust was caring for 77 coronavirus patients, down from 100 from the previous week.
