An inmate died after he was found in a non-responsive state in his cell at the Athens-Clarke County Jail, according to Clarke County Sheriff John Q. Williams.
The 52-year-old man was found about 5 a.m., and there was no indication of foul play, Williams said.
The sheriff asked the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to investigate. The man’s name has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
Clarke County Coroner Sonny Wilson said the man had medical issues and the death appeared to be from natural causes.
After the inmate s condition was discovered, jail staff began lifesaving efforts until emergency responders arrived, according to Williams.
