Updated: 5:18 PM EDT Jul 22, 2021 The president of Converse University died Wednesday night when he fell off his bike, according to the coroner and university officials. Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger said Jeffrey Harrison Barker, 64, of Spartanburg, was found on Meadowbrook Road. Troopers said Barker ran off the right side of the road and fell off the bike.Troopers said it happened about 6:15 p.m. Troopers said the Barker was wearing a helmet and died at the scene. The Converse University community mourns the death of President Jeffrey H. Barker. Dr. Barker suddenly and tragically died the evening of July 21, 2021, in a fatal bicycle crash in Spartanburg, a release from the university said. The Converse University website said Barker was appointed as Converse University President during the 2021-2022 academic year. He was the university s 11th president. A Charter Communications worker was killed in a South Carolina shooting and standoff that also wounded two public workers repairing a sewer main, a deputy and a woman inside the home where the shooter was barricaded, authorities said.
The man who shot the workers fixing the sewer, 45-year-old Shannon Earl Smith, died from at least one gunshot wound at the hospital shortly after the standoff ended Thursday around 5 p.m., authorities said.
The cable TV worker killed and the woman wounded were inside Smith s Spartanburg home during the standoff where officers also fired shots, said Greenville County Sheriff s spokesman Lt. Ryan Flood, whose agency was asked to investigate because it was not involved in the incident.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. Two public workers repairing a sewer main in South Carolina were shot by a man who also fired on a deputy Thursday, authorities said.
The shooter was involved in a standoff inside a home that ended after a few hours, but Spartanburg Sheriff Chuck Wright said he didn t know the condition of the man or if anyone else was inside the house.
