Rigby, ID – Students at Rigby Middle School said that at first they thought their principal had gotten more creative by adding terrifying sounds to a lockdown drill on Thursday after a 6th Grade girl opened fire on her classmates and school staff.
Jefferson County Sheriff Steve Anderson said the girl took a handgun out of her backpack at about 9:15 a.m. on May 6 and opened fire in the middle school’s hallway, the Citizen Times reported.

BOISE, Idaho - Authorities say they are trying to determine what prompted a young girl to open fire at a rural Idaho middle school, one of the few school shootings in which the suspect is female.
The shooting happened around 9 a.m. Thursday, when police say the girl pulled a handgun out of her backpack and shot two other students and an adult custodian before she was disarmed by a teacher and held until police arrived. All three were shot in the extremities, and none had life-threatening injuries.
Two students and a school employee were shot on Thursday when a sixth-grader opened fire at an Idaho middle school.
“She retrieved a handgun from her backpack and fired multiple rounds inside of the school and out,” Jefferson County Sheriff Steve Anderson said at a news conference on Thursday afternoon.
“During the shooting, a teacher disarmed the student and detained her until law enforcement took her into custody. We don’t have a lot of details right now and are following all leads.”
None of the injuries the three victims sustained are life-threatening, and all are expected to recover. One student may have been shot twice, in multiple limbs.
In the US, sixth-grade children are usually 11 or 12 years old.
A teacher disarmed the girl and held her until law enforcement arrived and took her into custody, authorities said.
All three victims were shot in their extremities. Authorities say they are investigating the motive for the attack and how the girl got the gun.
Police were called to the school at about 9.15am after pupils and staffers heard gunfire.
“Me and my classmate were just in class with our teacher – we were doing work – and then all of a sudden, there was a loud noise and then there were two more loud noises. Then there was screaming,” said Yandel Rodriguez, 12. “Our teacher went to check it out and he found blood.”
