Curry needs to resign : Councilman Garrett Dennis calls for Mayor Lenny Curry to step down, citing JEA debacle, transparency
Dennis was a critical swing vote when the proposed Lot J project was shot down in Jacksonville City Council on Tuesday. Author: David Jones Updated: 10:38 PM EST January 14, 2021
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. A Jacksonville City Councilman issued a statement Thursday calling for Mayor Lenny Curry to step down in the wake of a scathing report on the failed privatization of JEA and a vote in council that shot down the Lot J project.
Coming toward the end of a busy news week at Jacksonville City Hall, Councilman Garrett Dennis is calling on Curry to resign from office.
When the Jacksonville City Council met Tuesday night to decide the fate of the proposed Lot J deal, Councilman Garrett Dennis knew he could hold the deciding vote. This was not an ideal position for the developers, given Dennis’ criticism of the deal, and more notably, his bitter, longstanding feud with Mayor Lenny Curry, one of the deal’s most vocal champions.
Still, there was optimism among some proponents that Dennis would come around, considering the promising commitments he secured from representatives of the project’s developers, a group spearheaded by Jaguars owner Shad Khan, including a pledge to invest $2 million into a city trust fund that would help the struggling Eastside neighborhood.
