Congress to monitor the implementation of the European Charter of Local Self-Government in Spain

A delegation from the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe will monitor the application of the Charter in Spain, from 18 to 20 May 2021.
The delegation consists of the rapporteurs Bryony Rudkin (United Kingdom, SOC/G/PD) and David Eray (Switzerland, EPP/CCE). They will hold meetings with local and national authorities of Spain to evaluate the implementation of the charter. The previous monitoring report and recommendation about local and regional democracy in Spain were adopted in 2013. All meetings will be held remotely due to the current health crisis.

On the occasion of the ongoing session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Congress President, Leendert Verbeek met with the President of the Parliamentary Assembly, Rik Daems and with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Marija Pejčinović Burić, on 20 April 2021.
Both President Daems and Secretary General Pejčinović Burić underlined the unique role of the Congress in the institutional architecture of the Council of Europe and the paramount importance of the local and regional authorities grass-root contribution to addressing the challenges faced by the member States of the Council of Europe.
