Congress’ Assam loss shatters hopes of GoP’s revival in the NorthEast

In the seven Northeast states, the Congress was in power in five states prior to 2016. Tripura had the Left Front ruling while Nagaland had a regional party in power. However, after the 2016 assembly polls in Assam, the Northeastern states started moving one after the other away from the Congress.

Congress workers were hoping that their party would improve its tally and form the government in Assam, resuscitating the grand old party to regain its bastion of Northeast India. Their hopes were shattered on Sunday as the Congress managed to win only 29 seats in 126-member assembly, which is just an extra three seats compared to the 2016 assembly polls.

GUWAHATI: Chattisgarh chief minister and AICC observer for Assam elections Bhupesh Baghel arrived here on Monday to review poll preparedness with the party leaders.
Baghel, along with with AICC general secretary Mukul Wasnik and secretary Shakeel Ahmad Khan, started reviewing poll preparedness with the party workers, where party in-charge for Assam, Jitendra Singh was also present.
“AICC has entrusted the responsibility on me to look after the party’s affairs in Assam and I am here,” he told reporters at Guwahati airport on arrival. Baghel visited Kamakhya temple before starting marathon meetings with party functionaries.
