Thana/Nilambur (Kerala):
Continuing his attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the border stand-off with China, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday accused him of weakening and destroying the country and claimed that for the first time Chinese troops were sitting inside Indian territory .
On a two-day visit to Kerala, where assembly elections are to be held in the next few months, he virtually kicked off the campaign of the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) and also slammed the ruling CPI(M)-led LDF, alleging their policies have caused damage to the state.

The Left Democratic Front (LDF) would fight the Assembly election primarily on twin fronts.
On the political front, it would confront the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) for “kowtowing” to Islamist organisations and Hindu majoritarian forces in a feeble attempt to grasp power.
LDF convenor A. Vijayaraghavan, who attended the LDF State committee meeting here, said the UDF’s overtures to fundamentalist forces were akin to a drowning person grasping at straws.
The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has exerted a stranglehold on the Congress, he said.
The Congress has approached Oommen Chandy more than four years after it washed its hands of the leader and virtually forced him into political exile after the Congress lost the 2016 elections to the CPI(M)
Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala House witnessed uproarious scenes on Thursday as the no-confidence motion moved by Indian Union Muslim League MLA, M Ummer against Speaker P Sreeramakrishnan was rejected by the House. The House rejected a resolution moved by the Opposition UDF seeking removal of Speaker P Sreeramakrishnan over allegations against him in the dollar smuggling case and ‘irregularities’ in modifications undertaken in the legislature complex.
After a tempestuous debate on the resolution, the Congress-led United Democratic Front members walked out dissatisfied with Sreeramakrishnan’s reply dismissing the charges. This was the first time in last 17 years a resolution for removal of the Speaker was moved in the state assembly. In the past, such resolutions had been moved against A C Jose and Vakkom Purushothaman, both of UDF.

The Kerala assembly election is most likely to be held in March-end 0r in early April. The poll surveys have indicated that most likely the Pinarayi Vijayan-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) may get a second term government despite the scandal involving a gold smuggling scam through diplomatic channels. If it happens, the Congress party could very well be doomed for ever in Kerala like the CPI(M) in West Bengal.
