Upton Urges More COVID Vaccinations

July 20, 2021 Congressman Fred Upton says it’s important more southwest Michigan residents get vaccinated against COVID-19. He tells WSJM News he’s spoken with local hospitals, and they know the Delta variant is here. “What’s alarming is, the way this thing spreads, particularly with the Delta variant, is likely to be four to six additional people will be exposed for everyone who gets the variant, versus under the plain COVID-19, it’s less than two,” Upton said. Upton says some southwest Michigan counties have the lowest COVID vaccination rates in the state. “We have a number of counties, particularly here in southwest Michigan, where it’s still under 50% of the folks have been fully vaccinated. That’s trouble. That’s real trouble if the Delta variant gets a hold.”

Commissioner Pleased Berrien County Is Keeping MSA Designation

The decision this week by the federal Office of Management and Budget to halt a proposed change to the definition of a Metropolitan Statistical Area is being welcomed by the Berrien County Board of Commissioners. Speaking during this week’s meeting, Commissioner Bob Harrison said the numbers used by the government to define an MSA do matter to communities. “Years and years ago, I was a regional health planner, and the reliance on those types of governmental designations was really critical in formulating, in my case, health policy but also in respect to money that comes to the region from both the state and federal government,” Harrison said.

Upton Urges COVID Vaccination

With the Delta variant of COVID-19 now in Michigan, Congressman Fred Upton is urging everyone to get vaccinated. He tells WSJM News it’s the best way to stay protected and to protect others. “Nothing’s 100%, but you’re better off if you’re vaccinated,” Upton said. “Some national reports, of course, show that 99.2% of the Americans who died of COVID in the month of June had not been vaccinated at all.” The Delta variant has been detected in Kalamazoo County, where 61.1% of the population is vaccinated. Berrien County isn’t doing as well with 52.4% vaccinated, while 54.9% are vaccinated in Van Buren County, and just 36.9% are vaccinated in Cass County. Statewide, Michigan is at 62% vaccinated with at least one dose.

Upton Questions COVID Origins

Did COVID-19 originate in a lab? Congressman Fred Upton thinks it’s possible. He and other members of Congress met last week with former CDC Director Robert Redfield about the possibility that the disease is man-made. Upton says he came away from the conversation with more questions. “I’m not at all convinced that this is coming from some wet market in China, but in fact, likely developed in a lab someplace,” Upton said. “I don’t know exactly how it got out, but not getting any cooperation, really, from the Chinese authorities really sheds light that this thing was developed in a lab there, at least to me.”
