Sri Sankara Vijayendra Saraswathi, the 70th pontiff of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam, arrived in Madurai city on Thursday night on a three-day visit.
The pontiff was accorded a traditional reception by the disciples. Special pujas will be performed at the mutt here at Besant Road in Chokkikulam on Friday from 9.30 a.m., and in the evening and on Saturday morning. The pontiff is scheduled to leave the city on Saturday evening.
D. Ramasubramanian, president of the Madurai branch of the mutt, said public would be allowed to have a darshan of Sri Sankara Vijayendra Saraswathi. Mr. Ramasubramanian, secretary A.B. Sundar and treasurer K. Sri Kumar have made the arrangements for the visit.

In a gesture aimed at communal amity, a Muslim businessman from the city has donated Rs 1 lakh towards the construction of the Ram Temple at Ayodhya, as voluntary contribution from devotees in Tamil Nadu for the shrine in Uttar Pradesh has been growing. Daily wage earners like cobblers and small traders are among those making contributions to help raise the proposed magnificent structure.
With the Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Teerth Kshetra (SRJTK), set up by the Centre to construct the temple, coming out with donation coupons of Rs 10, 100 and 1,000, a large number of people came forward to donate, said S V Srinivasan, VHP state organising secretary who is involved in raising funds for the temple. All those whom we approached have been generous in donating for the noble cause, he added.

The bhoomi puja for the construction of the Padmavathi Ammavaru temple at the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) premises in T. Nagar was launched by Sankara Vijayendra Saraswathi Sankaracharya, the pontiff of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam, at a grand function held on Saturday. The Kanchi Mutt chief pontiff also unveiled a stone plaque on the occasion.
As part of the the bhoomi puja function, the Sankaracharya swamigal handed over a cow and calves to eight temples in the State, in a function called ‘Gudiko Gomaatha’.
The bhoomi puja function was attended by various office bearers of the TTD, including chairman Y.V. Subba Reddy, executive officer, K.S. Jawahar Reddy, and A.J. Sekar, president of the Local Advisory Committee.
