The BLM has issued a fire prevention order during Wildfire Awareness Month to help prevent human-caused wildfires.
BLM announced the BLM Idaho State Director John F. Ruhs signed the 2021 Fire Prevention Order, which bans specific fire-related activities from May 10 to October 20. The order makes it illegal to burn explosives or use exploding targets, fireworks or steel component ammunition on BLM land in Idaho. Any shooting at steel or ferrous materials with dry vegetation is also banned, according to BLM. Anyone who knowingly violates the order could be fined or held responsible.

California’s Insurance Commissioner is calling for insurance companies to support home-hardening and community mitigation safety efforts ahead of wildfire season. It’s Wildfire Awareness Month, and Commissioner Ricardo Lara is taking action to protect and prepare Californians.
“Common sense wildfire mitigation we know protects lives, protects homes, and our first responders,” Lara said. “Hardened homes and communities are easier to protect and defend. Our first responders and local communities are doing their part. Insurance companies need to start doing theirs as well.”
Currently, eight insurers and the California FAIR Plan offer discounts to homeowners who take steps to harden their homes.

Dry Conditions During Wildfire Awareness Month
Beginning this week, Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is prohibiting the use of fireworks, exploding targets or metallic targets for target shooting, sky lanterns, and firing tracer or incendiary devices on all BLM-managed public lands throughout Oregon and Washington. Additionally, the Northwest Oregon District is announcing a year-round fire order to decrease human-caused wildfires as well.
May is ‘Wildfire Awareness Month’ and the BLM and partner agencies encourage all visitors to do their part to protect public lands and local communities from wildfires this year. As public lands continue to see high visitation rates in Oregon and Washington, all visitors must be aware of fire restrictions and fire closures on BLM public lands.
