A migrant was found dead late last month on a rugged hillside a few miles north of the border, local and federal authorities confirmed this week.
A volunteer search-and-rescue organization alerted authorities to the 33-year-old man’s death around 2:45 p.m. June 30, according to statements from the U.S. Border Patrol and Medical Examiner’s Office.
Personnel from the Sheriff’s Department were sent in search of the body; an ASTREA helicopter crew helped locate it, sheriff’s spokesperson Lt. Amber Baggs said in a statement.
According to the Medical Examiner’s Office, the body was on a mountain just north of Otay Mountain Truck Trail, a few miles north of the border and southwest of Dulzura.
Forty-three refugees drown off Libya’s coast: victims of the European Union’s refugee policy
At least 43 refugees drowned on January 19 off the Libyan coast during their attempt to cross the Mediterranean Sea to Europe. Only 10 people could be rescued. They were returned to Libya by the Libyan coastguard. The mass death in the Mediterranean, for which the European Union (EU) bears responsibility, thus continues into yet another year.
The dinghy, carrying more than 50 people, suffered engine failure amid rough seas and capsized shortly after leaving the port city of Zawiyah, west of Tripoli, in the early hours of the morning. The survivors, who came from the Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Ghana and Gambia, stated that everyone on board the capsized boat came from West Africa.

As the world marks International Migrants Day 2020, a research conducted by a United Nations agency the Missing Migrant Project of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), has revealed that more Africans have lost their lives to irregular migration in 2020 than any other people across the world.
According to the data, out of about 3,101 migrants who died globally in 2020 while trying to reach different international destinations through irregular routes, 1,483 of them were Africans.
The Media Officer for The Migrant Project, Tayo Elegbede, said the deaths were recorded across six regions of the world between January 1 and December 16, 2020.
THERE is nothing to celebrate about Europe’s treatment of refugees at its external borders, said migrant rights organisations on International Migrants Day today.
Alarm Phone, an activist network that runs a hotline for refugees in distress at sea, called on the European and Libyan coastguard authorities today to release the results of their investigations into the estimated 91 people who went missing in the central Mediterranean 10 months ago.
The 91 people departed from Garabulli, Libya, in a rubber boat late at night on February 9.
Alarm Phone’s activists received a call from the boat in the early hours the following morning and reported it to the Libyan, Italian and Maltese coastguards.
